David and Robert Nielsen.

Nielsen Brothers, Inc. (NBI) is owned by two brothers and a partner, who began operations in 1979 and were incorporated in 1990. The Nielsen brothers are Pacific Northwest natives who share a combined 60+ years in the logging and forest management industry. Since its inception, NBI has been conducting contract logging services for major timberland owners and harvesting their own timber.

Fresh out of high school (in the 1970s), Robert and David Nielsen started cutting firewood and selling it in their local area. That was just the beginning. Robert met Jake Reimer, a professional logger who provided a wealth of knowledge, mentoring him regarding logging and the business side of logging. Reimer taught Robert to run equipment such as skidders, log loaders, crawler tractors, and how to fall trees. On weekends, Reimer would take Robert to timber sales and walk through the woods to discuss timber volumes, log pricing, and running property lines. This education was invaluable.

In 1979, the Nielsen’s purchased a 40-acre tract of land and became self-employed. Jake Reimer continued to help the young men become successful. Robert said, “Jake shut his operation down and loaned us his machinery. We made enough money on that job to buy a Clark skidder on payments, and put some money in our pockets. Then we were out looking for the next job.”

Today, NBI’s skilled workforce includes forestry experts with extensive and broad experience in timber cruising, logging, cable and ground-based systems, harvest layout, road construction, rock crushing, timber valuations, and sales. NBI custom harvests over 60 MMBF annually, on both public and private lands. With an administrative office located in Bellingham and an operations facility based out of Sedro Woolley, the company conducts logging operations and manages forest lands primarily in the northwest corner of Washington state, and has over 70 employees.

As with any successful company, employees are the backbone of its operation. Most of the employees have been in the woods for 20-plus years, and are well-educated in the forest industry. The forest crews are backed by dedicated, professional office staff whose collective, superior work ethic has made NBI a leader among logging companies in the northwest corner of Washington.

NBI offers professional expertise in timber cruising, forest management planning, and forest practice permits. The company has experienced crews, and enough mechanized equipment to run three ground-based and two cable-logging operations. With a focus on safety, efficiency, respect for the environment, and consistent high-quality productivity, NBI’s dedicated and capable crews provide high-quality timber harvesting, selective thinning, small parcel tree removal, reforestation, blowdown, and salvage services. It can also provide rock crushing, forest road building, and bridge construction.

For David Nielsen, it is all about running the logging and road construction side of things, while Robert divides his time between the office, keeping paperwork flowing, and the field, looking at timber sales. To think it all started out with cutting firewood; but thanks to good people, innovation, and hard work, the company is still a mainstay in Northwest Washington.
